We are so.very.excited! to announce the release of our first collaborative ebook, Time to Travel!

Addie, Jonie, Amy and I (Nichole) have been working for the past five months to put together an ebook with sewing themed projects/ideas for our sweet boys! We began this project back in January, dreaming of warmer weather and vacation days, road trips and beach trips, and what we would want our guys to have when we out and about on these adventures…and now, here we are!!

Time to Travel has four “main” PDF patterns: The Adventure Belt, The Ready, Set, Go! Wallet, the Just Like Papa Briefcase, and the Swansea Bag. **PLUS** there are so many extras tucked in! Printables, traveling tips/tricks, and more!

I hope you’re feeling as excited about this ebook as we are! Be on the look-out for upcoming events such as a wonderful blog tour, a sew-along, and more!

I want to leave you with some images from our amazing testers…the different versions of these projects turned out wonderfully, and I’m sure they’ll leave you feeling inspired to grab your own copy of Time to Travel! Happy Sewing!!

Superhero Cape Tutorial in 30 Minutes or Less

Sewing With Boys 30 Minute Super Hero Cape Tutorial

Fuel up your boy’s imagination in no time flat with this quick and easy 30 minute superhero cape tutorial. Girls aren’t the only ones that love to dress up, so do boys. This would be the perfect project for your boy to sew with you, since it requires minimum sewing. Just imagine how proud your boy will be flying around the yard in a superhero cape he made!! (These also make a terrific gift for your boy to make for his friends!)

Supplies needed :

  • Rectangle of Fabric (this would be a great use of an old pillowcase.)
  • Scraps for Initial and Background
  • Scraps of Fusible Interweave
  • Small Square of Velcro

Sewing With Boys 30 Minute Super Hero Cape Tutorial

1. Lay out your rectangle of fabric and make sure it isn’t too long for your child and that it is the width you want the bottom of the cape to be.
2. Now you are going to make your cape shape. Fold your fabric in half lengthwise. Use a long ruler and make an angle starting at the width you want the top of the cape to be. End your angle at the bottom outside corner of your cape.
3. You are going to cut the straps from your scrap triangle of fabrics you have left from cutting out the main cape piece.
4. I cut mine from the middle of the scrap piece and cut it about 8 inches long, your length will depend on your child’s size.

30 Minute Superhero Cape by Knot Sew Normal  Next you will cut out your background shape and your initial out of fusible interweave, make sure you cut out your letter in reverse. Iron the shapes to your scrap fabric and cut them out. I used pinking shears to cut mine out to add a little interest. Iron your background and then your letter to your cape and stitch in place using either a zig-zag stitch or a straight stitch close to the edge.

30 Minute Superhero Cape by Knot Sew Normal Next you are going to finish the edges of your cape and your strap pieces. I used my Serger, if you don’t have a serger then just use a zig-zag stitch right along the edges of all three pieces. (ignore my ugly serged stitches here, I didn’t realize that one of my needle threads wasn’t secure and I ended up with loopy threads on the back and I had to redo them.)
1. After you finish your edges you are going to fold over the top edge of the cape to the wrong side of the cape and stitch around the 2 sides and the bottom.
2. Place your strap pieces along the top outside edges of the cape beside the top piece you folded down.
3. Attach your straps by first using a straight stitch and then going over with your zig-zag stitch several times to reinforce the straps.
4. Place your hook and loop tape on each of the strap pieces and stitch in to place.

***For the final step just put your cape on your child and watch them transform into a superhero right in front of your eyes!!

Sewing With Boys Blog Contributor Interview: Amy Macdonald

amyinterview

The week for our interview we have Amy, Sewing with Boys Contributor. It was fun to learn more about her and her family. I know you will enjoy getting to know more about the amazing work she does.

How long have you been sewing?

Technically since I was twelve, but I took a break when I moved out on my own, so: seventeen years minus about four (don’t do the math! Thirty already feels too close!).

How many boys do you sew for? How old are they? (Husbands count!)

I sew for my two sons, my best friend’s son, my nephew, and, just recently, my husband.

What is your favorite item you have sewn for your boy/boys?

This is a hard question! Usually, whatever I’ve just finished is my favorite 😉 If I had to pick, it would be between these three:

What do you think are the biggest obstacles in sewing for boys?

Honestly, the limits we place on ourselves – sewing for boys doesn’t have to be as hard as we like to make it seem! Basic items are so easy to “dress up” by using stencils, iron-on vinyl, appliques, what ever you can think of! I have no problem putting my boys in any color they want – my oldest loves to wear every color of the rainbow, especially orange and pink.

Where is your favorite place to buy fabric for boys?

We’re fairly rural and I like to feel fabric before I buy it, so I mostly buy from JoAnn’s and Goodwill. Even though the “boy section” at JoAnn’s is limited, I love to embellish, so I find myself sticking to solid colors anyway. And upcycling shirts and pants from thrift stores is so fast and easy!

Who are you favorite boy pattern designers?

I love GYCT, Blank Slate, Titchy Threads, Charming Doodle, Pattern for Pirates, and Shwin&Shwin, to name a few. I also have three Ottobre magazines and love them!

Do you sew with the boys in your life? If so, what do you make with them?

They’re both still too young to sew, but I can’t wait for them to be old enough! I did make some lacing cards for my almost-four-year-old (they’ll be available next week in our Time to Travel eBook!) – the first time he played with them, I needed to run some errands. I asked if he wanted to go with me or stay home with his dad and he goes “I think I’ll just stay here and sew for a while.” Proudest moment of my life – haha!

Lacing Cards from Sewing with Boys

Why do you think it is important to teach boys to sew?

I think it’s a life skill just like cooking or mowing the lawn! It can never hurt to know how to do something – and I really don’t want to be sewing on their popped buttons for the rest of my life!

What would you like to see more of in the Boy Sewing world?

Definitely more interesting patterns. There are a lot of basic patterns out there, but I would love to see more detailed, intriguing ones!

How do you challenge yourself to break gender stereotypes when sewing for your boy(s)?

I just don’t think about them! If I see a fabric or have an idea that I know my boys will like, I go for it and don’t really care if it might be considered “girly”.

What (or who) inspires your boy sewing?

My kids, of course. The bulk of my sewing is for them – mainly because they grow like weeds and constantly need new clothes! They are both tall and slim, so RTW clothes just fall off them – custom clothes are actually a necessity. I’ve just started sewing for my husband – he has a similar build and his shirts are never long enough. He also goes through (expensive!) work pants like crazy, so I’m tweaking the fit of the Jutland Pants for him.

Tell us a bit about your favorite boy(s)!

Ah – my boys – they are so fun and crazy and (sometimes) maddening! John is almost four and quite possibly smarter than I am already. He’s what his doctor calls “busy” – always into everything, trying to see how stuff works, wanting to know the “why’s” of the world, and always wanting to “help” me do everything. Tim is almost two and such a little love. He’s just as curious as his big brother, but not quite so busy – he’d be happy if I did nothing but cuddle him all day long! Andy (aka; Daddy) is the best – he’s so supportive of my crafting/sewing/blogging. He doesn’t even grumble (loudly, anyway…) at all the piles of fabric I have stashed around the house!

Tell us about your blog and what inspired you to start it.

My best friend and I blog at Friends Stitched Together – we started it as a way to document the things we were making for our kids. Since then, it’s grown to be a serious hobby! We have several challenges that we’re involved in (CraftingCon and Mystery Challenge). I have met so many sewing bloggers this past year and some of them have turned into true friends that I chat with every day!
